okok i've been slack! but what better time is there to return to blogging than when uni starts up and you have lectures to study, worksheets to complete and tests to prepare for.
note to self: must remember why i dislike playing dota and not play when tempted. Anyhow!
The Experiment: Friend making.
Aim: To make new friends.
Method: 1. sit down to desired friend, and strike up conversation. Either i) ask about present tute/lecture and befriend as such ii) introduce yourself and hopefully receive a warm return iii) slip them a $X bill, where X is the money equivilient of how much you want a friend.
Alternate methods may arise depending on situation e.g meet a friend through already established friend.
Results: befriended two randoms with methods ii). Also befriended one random through forced group work.
Discussion: I was really looking forward to meeting some new people this year. But I've found that 2nd year is really hard to meet new people. Everyone's already in their own little groups, and despite our engineering course splitting into our specialised courses, it's so damn hard to meet new people.
I purposefully made one tutorial free of any known friends, so I could force myself to make new friends. What ended up happening was me going around to groups asking if they wanted to form a group for this tutorial =_= so embrassing. Like I'm some poor little asian with no friends (which isn't too far off the truth in this context). Got rejected like 6 times, before I ended up having to picking off loners to form a group of four. One of them, Li, was quite nice and ended up meeting him later on in the week.
I managed to gather enough courage to try and strike up a conversation with two randoms sitting near by me, but only got a dead pan response and a mildly interested response.
Conclusion: The only way I see of making new friends is meeting them through other friends. In this way, you form a group in which you all have a connection to at least one person, and you eventually branch out. That's what happened last year anyway and it was great. 2nd year seems so much duller.
Maybe I should look for that public speaking/debating club.

p.p.s the picture above is a fruit my housemate gave me to try. It was very interesting to eat, not strong in flavor, but very passionfruit like? Anyone know what it is? The box it came in said 'something' figs.
